| Indian Railways widens BioDiesel Blending Project | 04.08.2008 |

The Indian Railways (IR) moves 50 % of passenger traffic and 40 % of freight traffic using high speed diesel (HSD), IR has an annual consumption of 2,27 million kilo litres of HSD. Experiments with a 10 % blending of bio-diesel have been successful. Hence a decision to procure 50000 Klitres of bio-diesel annually to scale up the project and bring down costs.
A Malaysian JV, Khard -Carotech is expected to supply bulk 44000K litres of this requirement. The bio-diesel will be produced using crude palm oil using technology patented by Carotech Bhd, the Malaysian company. The price decided is around Rs 32 (50 cents) per litre. Jatropa based bio-diesel suppliers are expected to supply the balance quantities. Business Line, 12 th,july 2008
