Daimler AG with manufacturing plants at Pune has tied up with Hero Honda, Indias biggest motorcycle manufacturer to set up a JV that will produce 70000 trucks per annum. Similarly Nissan Motor Company building a truck plant with Ashok Leyland at Chennai. The truck market is growing at 7 % per annum. Chennai is already home to BMW, Ford, Hyundai etc. High level of localisation, availability of skilled workers and presence of auto hubs are the factors behind the decision. However commodity price watchers feel increasing commodity prices without economies of scale will mean cost advantages get substantially eroded. It remains to be seen which view will become correct.
